In what’s becoming a trademark of Emerging Pictures’ special movie events, last Saturday we held our latest interactive Q&A, and our most successful one to date in terms of theatre participation. The “simultaneous world premiere” of Joffrey: Mavericks of American Dance featured a live webcasted introduction by Dance Film Association’s Joanna Ney and the film’s director Bob Hercules, and was followed by a 40-minute interactive Q&A and panel discussion. Over 30 theatres spread out across the United States were tuned in and projecting these live portions in their auditoriums, and we received questions via Twitter in real time from more than 20 of those theatres, both new highs for Emerging. Audience members from Philadelphia (Prince Music Theater) to Naples, Florida (Silverspot Cinema) to Bridgeport, Connecticut (Bijou Theatre) tweeted questions and even photos and videos directly from their smartphone to document and share the experience. The hashtag #JoffreyMovie yielded over 200 Tweets, reaching over 200,000 people on Twitter, providing a valuable burst of exposure for a modest documentary film. But in addition to being a new way of marketing the film, these interactive national screenings are just flat out fun! And easy for theatres to participate in too. We can’t wait for the next one…(coming in March!).

The performing arts have long been holdouts for unfiltered, direct connection between audiences and performers in a digitized, electronic and screen-laden world.
Not anymore.
Opera houses, ballet companies, even the National Theater in London, are competing to lure audiences to live high-definition broadcasts in movie theaters, many of which are then shown again. It is the HD-ification of the arts, and it is already affecting programming decisions along with costume and set design, lighting choices and even ticket prices.

The Flames of Paris opens Nov. 2!

Ballet in Cinema presents The Flames of Paris from the Bolshoi Ballet!
This presentation is the kick-off of Emerging Pictures’ Ballet in Cinema series, which will continue throughout the year with both live broadcasts and recordings of performances from the Bolshoi, the Paris Opera Ballet, Covent Garden and La Scala. (See complete schedule below.)
THE FLAMES OF PARIS portrays the French Revolution as told through two love stories, heinous acts perpetrated by the evil Marquis Costa de Beauregard, battalions of the Marseillais troops on the march to Paris, the appearance of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, the storming of their royal palace, The Tuilleries, and, of course, the swiftly descending knife of the guillotine.
This screening is a high-definition recording from a March 2010 performance of THE FLAMES OF PARIS at the world renowned Bolshoi Theatre of Moscow. The ballet was first performed in 1934 at the then Kirov Theatre, today’s Mariinsky Theatre, in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). THE FLAMES OF PARIS became one of Stalin’s favorite ballets, an art form not particularly favored by the Soviet leader. The ballet was originally presented on the eve of the anniversary of Russia’s October Revolution, the inception of the first Communist government. Given that THE FLAMES OF PARIS is about the conflagration of the French Revolution, it was not surprising that the ballet was a favorite of Stalin’s and was a perennial favorite at the celebrations that marked the Russian Revolution and the Soviet Union’s start.

The Nutcracker opens Dec. 1 and LIVE on Dec. 19!

A magician with secrets, an enchanted gift, a battle with the Mouse King, a guiding angel and a visit through the Land of Snow to the Kingdom of Sweets: it must be the seasonal favorite, The Nutcracker. The ballet draws on all the imagination and fantasy of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story of Christmas Eve, when young Clara creeps downstairs for one of her presents, but finds herself instead at the start of a night of magical adventures.
This year, Ballet in Cinema is proud to present not one, but TWO productions of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker!
